KUMU: An Exhibition of Works by OJI Masanori & ONO Rina at MR KITLY in Melbourne, Australia
Of all the items we have in the shop, it is always so nice to see how people are drawn to the wooden and brass objects by OJI Masanori and ONO Rina. The wooden cups and mugs and brass bottle openers have gone to many happy homes over the past months, and I warmly invite everyone who owns a piece, has been coveting a piece, or is curious to see more, to the exhibition. The theme of the exhibition is KUMU, which translates to 'link or partner up, to unite.'
A person partners up with another person.
A community develops.
A person partners up with a thing.
Culture is nourished.
A material partners up with another material.
It gives a birth to a new thing.
OJI Masanori will present works designed by himself, ONO Rina and other select Japanese designers who all design in partnership with Japan's artisanal workshops. Alongside the popular works at MR KITLY, OJI Masanori has selected new works; these new objects are all previously unseen in Australia. All objects in the exhibition will be available for purchase.
This collective of designers highlight the tradition in Japan of beautiful craftmanship in wood, metal and paper. By partnering with traditional workshops and studios in creating new works, designers such as OJI Masanori ensure the deep appreciation of good design and beautiful craftsmanship so evident for so long in Japan continues well into the future.
